Bell Bird Historic Bridge

28 November 2024

The Bell Bird Historic Bridge, constructed around 1914, spans the Moturoa Stream in Brooklyn Central Park, Wellington, linking the Caretakers Track to the Playground Track. The project involved the demolition and replacement of the timber superstructure of this historic in-situ concrete arch bridge, addressing the deteriorating condition of the timber and its fixings. The aim was to extend the bridge’s lifespan while preserving its historic character.

A key aspect of the project was maintaining the original concrete arch substructure, with only minor surface repairs and water blasting needed. The new 22-meter-long timber superstructure was constructed on top of the existing concrete arch. It features glulam timber towers and bearers, timber joists and decking, steel fixings, and timber and steel barriers. Many elements of the new superstructure incorporate historic detailing or replicate the original design.

The project was completed in October 2024 by Edifice Structures.
