Rangitoto causeway
Back in April 2024, we shared a glimpse of a project that Brian and Jenna had been working on. Here is the completed project. The construction of the causeway crossing was successfully completed.
The existing timber beam bridge connecting Rangitoto and Motutapu Islands was approaching the end of its operational life. To accommodate heavy commercial vehicles and occasional overloads of heavy equipment, an upgrade was crucial. This causeway serves as a vital link, providing access for the Department of Conservation (DOC), Motutapu Farms Limited, and pedestrians moving between the islands. In addition to its practical role, the crossing also holds historical significance, having been originally constructed and used during both World War I and World War II as part of the coastal defence infrastructure.
The construction works involved the installation of three precast concrete box culverts, along with concrete approach slabs and in-situ concrete placed between them. Pedestrian barriers and kerbs were added on both sides of the causeway, ensuring safety and accessibility.
