Le Roys Bush and Little Shoal Bay are scenic reserves in Kaipatiki on Auckland’s North Shore that have a wide variety of fauna and flora including kauri, tanekaha, taraire and totara.

Frame Group was engaged by Auckland Council for professional services to prepare a walking track renewal programme for these two reserves.  Subsequently, Frame Group was engaged for design documentation and construction management for the staged upgrade of tracks and structures in Le Roys Bush and Little Shoal Bay, Birkenhead.  Due to the presence of kauri trees in parts of the reserves particular attention was taken in implementing mitigation measures to reduce the risk of spread of Kauri Dieback, caused by Phytophthora taxon agathidicida (PA), a fungus-like disease that can kill kauri trees of any age.

Track and structures were carefully designed to minimise impact on the site and to meet Kauri Dieback construction protocols.  The design includes carefully planned wetland boardwalks, and improved track width and grades to improve accessibility of the tracks for a range of users.  The construction involved delivery of materials into the site by helicopter and labour-intensive hand construction of structures.

Project features:

  • Re-surfacing of aggregate track

  • Installation of new timber boxed steps

  • Installation of timber staircases

  • Installation of timber boardwalks

  • Other track upgrade works e.g. timber retaining walls, track drainage

Frame Group has also undertaken similar track renewal programming, design and construction management work within multiple Kaipātiki Reserves including, Eskdale Reserve, Chatswood Reserve and Kauri Glen Reserve.
